The Dickie Joe Burkey Scholarship is in honor of a young man who would have been pleased to help other students advance their education and achieve their goals. Dickie Joe Burkey, born March, 12, 1943, was the son of Grace and Paul Burkey. He was mild mannered, pleasant, and a very good student who had hoped for a future in veterinary medicine. Dickie Joe would have graduated with the fourth graduating class from Garaway; the Class of 1961. However, seventh grade, taught by Mr. Andy Foster in room 101, (Mr. Gerber's current classroom) was Dickie Joe's last year in school. He lost his battle with leukemia on January 22, 1956. In those days, leukemia always won.
